Jury Duty SCAM

Pass this on to your grown children. This has been verified by the FBI and SNOPES(their links are  also included below). Please pass this on to everyone in your email address book. This first came out in 2005. Be prepared should you get this call. Most of us take those summonses for jury duty seriously, but enough people skip out on their civic duty that a new and ominous kind of fraud has surfaced.

The caller claims to be a jury
 DUTY
coordinator. If you protest that you never received a summons for jury duty, the scammer asks you for your Social Security number and date of birth so he or she can verify the information and cancel the arrest warrant. Give out any of this information and bingo, your identity was just stolen.

The fraud has been reported so far in 11 states, including Oklahoma , Illinois , and Colorado . This (swindle) is particularly insidious because they use intimidation over the phone to try to bully people into giving information by pretending they are with the court system.

The FBI and the federal court system have issued nationwide alerts on their web sites , warning consumers about the fraud.

I have received a communiqué from Friendship Force International advising several members are suddenly receiving emails requesting money to get home – and they are using legitimate names of Friendship Force members. This is a SCAM. They advise:

DO NOT WIRE ANYONE MONEY AS A RESULT OF ONE OF THESE EMAILS.

Although there may be a name you recognize – it is a SCAM. DO NOT REPLY TO THESE EMAILS. This can put your computer and email account in danger – it is a SCAM.

When traveling with Friendship Force and you have an emergency, you must (1) contact your Exchange Director, (2) your Program Coordinator, (3) FFI’s emergency # 404-522-9490 ext. 375, (4) the relevant Consulate.

And – ALWAYS be suspicious if the sender of an email asks for money!
